A Few of My Favorite Things, 2011
"When my boss yells, when my boy nags, when my knee starts to ache, when I'm feeling sad........
I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don't feel so bad."
1. My favorite book(s) this year were The Hunger Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Yes, I know it was written for teenagers and it’s fantasy, but I loved it and am looking forward to the movie. Sometimes you find great things when you venture out of your comfort zone.
2. Sons of Anarchy wins for my favorite TV show again. It was the best season yet. Motorcycle gang meets The Godfather, loved it. All hail, the prince has risen. In second place, The Walking Dead. Ben and I watch it every Sunday night. It's our bonding time.
3. Chicago. I took a trip to there this fall with my friends Gail and Kim and I loved it. The pizza at Girodano's and Garretts popcorn was so good. I loved the Chicago Institute for Art and the Millenium Bean. And thanks to Gail, I throughly enjoyed the Skinny Pink Lady at the martini bar, Flemings, and my champagne with peach foam at Pops. I'm heading for New Orleans in 2012. Can't wait to see what that brings.
4. Soccer. Ben played this fall for the Albany High School JV team and he loved it. Coaches Hasty, Justice and Weiss did a great job. There is no greater joy than watching your child do something he loves. One of Ben's first soccer coaches, John Waterson, would say to him at the start of every game "Just go out there and run Ben" and ten years later he's still running.
5. My Knifty Knitter remains in the top ten. This year I made around 100 hats for oncology patients, family, friends and area homeless shelters.
6. The Memoir Class at the Troy Arts Center truly inspired me. Marion Roach Smith is a terrific teacher. I learned so much about myself through my writing this year. It was a wonderful class, one I hope to experience again. Here's hoping the words keep coming in 2012.
7. Carr's Ginger Lemon Cremes English Tea Cookies. Yummy. The kids don't like them, so it's even better.
8. Butoto is a boy from the Congo that I sponsor on the soccer team. He is a wonderful, smart boy and it is my honor to have him as part of my life. I feel like I've been given a gift every time he smiles at me. I'm afraid we may have ruined him this past weekend by teaching him to play video games and giving him a Hot Pocket to eat.
So that's it, my favorite things in 2011. Happy Healthy New Year.
