My Favorite Things of 2012
It's that time of the year again. Here is my list of favorites for 2012, in no particular order.
1. My favorite TV shows The Walking Dead (love and hate it), Homeland (worth the cost of Showtime) and .....Sons of Anarchy (yet again). I don't know what that says about me as a person, but I don't care.
2. At least one Saturday morning each month I head to the Troy Farmers Market where I immerse myself in the crowds and enjoy the sounds, smells, and flavors of fresh produce, bakery items and everything in between. Why can't Albany have something like this? The church that people want to turn into a brewery, how about a year long Farmers Market instead? Rent it out as Art Space and turn it into a market place on the weekends. Good thinking. Maybe I should write a letter to the Times Union.
3. Watching Ben play soccer. There is no greater feeling as a parent then watching your child excel at something they love. He left it all on the field game after game this year and I couldn't be prouder of him.
4. My favorite music of the year is Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers. Both bands are quirky, talented, and fun. What more could you want in great music?
5. My favorite books of the year include the trilogy Fifty Shades of Gray, and the memoirs Wild, by Cheryl Strayed, Beautiful Boy, by David Sheffer and Tweaked by his son Nic Sheffer. You may wonder why I have three terrific memoirs listed with some "mommy porn", well it's because I liked the characters. ;) Don't roll your eyes.
6. Dr Glorimar Atiles is the surgeon who did my Gastric Bypass. With her excellent surgical skills and support and a lot of work on my part, I have reclaimed my life. Thanks also to my friends, family and co workers who supported me through the process. I have so much to look forward to in 2013.
7. "Climb every mountain................." Or at least four since turning 50 in October. Haystack in Vermont, Round Rock in Massachusetts, Mt Monadonock in New Hampshire and the Fifth Peak in the Adirondacks. I have learned from hiking these mountains that not every minute of an experience needs to be awesome for the whole thing to be utterly amazing. I struggle to climb up, I don't like coming down and the peaks have been cold and windy, but when I look back at what I have done, I am humbled, amazed and proud. My favorite of the bunch was Round Rocks on Thanksgiving day with my two sons. I hope to get one more in before the year ends, weather permitting. "We are now in the mountains and they are in us..." John Muir
8. My favorite college graduate is my son Samuel A. Wells. Sam graduated from University of Buffalo with two degrees, one in Urban and Regional Planning and one in Political Science. The world is his for the taking and his talents are there for the giving. May he achieve both with harmonious grace.
9. My new favorite toy is my iPhone. Now it's Ben who is saying , "do you have to "like" everything, do not post that on Facebook, and how did you use 75% of the data plan already?". Don't even get on me about playing Words With Friends. I'm very popular. Mostly because everyone kicks my ass in it.
10. My new favorite number is 130 because that is my goal weight and I hit it yesterday, 12/26/12. 96.8 pounds gone. In the past I would have celebrated by going out to dinner, but this time is different. I'm going to celebrate by treating my body like the sacred temple it is.
