Blondie, Richard Gere and Sex
When I think of the word “Rapture”, I think of the song by Blondie and their other song “Call Me”. This in turn, has me thinking of the film American Gigilo with Richard Gere and that reminds me of sex. That’s what Rapture means to me; Blondie, Richard Gere and Sex. The dictionary defines rapture as “the state of being carried away with joy, love, etc.; ecstasy; an expression of great joy, pleasure”. Sounds about right to me, but it’s the biblical meaning that had people talking this past weekend.
In Thessalonians 4:15-17 Rapture is referred to ... and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Christian radio host and Mathematician, Harold Camping stated that Rapture and Day of Judgment would take place Saturday at 6pm local time and the end of the world as we know it would take place 5 months later on October 21, 2011. This is not the first time he made this prediction and hence not the first time he has been wrong. After it didn’t happen as he predicted in 1994, Rev Camping went back to work and came up with Saturday’s date through a series of mathematical equations.
To prepare for the big event, I had an ice cream. I figured I would need the nourishment and extra calories to make it through the forthcoming hell, plus I knew I wasn’t going to be having sex with Richard Gere, so ice cream was the next best thing. By 8pm, I knew it was a hoax and the ice cream had long been digested and was quickly becoming fat cells.
So how did this crazy guy get so much attention? And did anyone really believe him? Reverend Camping spread his message through Family Radio, of which he is President. Family Radio is worth millions of dollars and spans more than 150 markets. Donations paid for the 1200 + Billboards. That explains how he got his message out, but I don’t understand why so many people believed him. So here’s my question. Did anyone believe him and how did they prepare for Rapture?
