Something To Do

Ben is leaving for college in three and a half months and I am starting to feel sad.  What am I going to do with myself?  I fear I will become a hermit, eat cereal for dinner every night and sit glued in front of the TV night after lonely night.  Before he goes, I am going to find things to do.  That's the plan.

I had been considering taking yoga classes for a while now, but it's confusing with all the different types and different classes offered.  I hate being over heated so hot yoga was definitely out, but what about the rest?  Doing a GOOGLE search under yoga in Albany, NY, I came across The Center for Nia and Yoga.  It seemed to be a combination of exercise, yoga and dance.  There was a Saturday morning class and I thought I would give it a try.  My co workers sort of smiled at the idea and one even said, "OK but don't get hurt."

Classic Nia welcoming in your Saturday! Motion is lotion for the joints. Playful, strengthening, energizing movements will have you grinning from the joy of moving your body! Nia is a well-being fitness and lifestyle program. It is the original and most advanced form of fitness fusion. Nia blends the martial arts, the healing arts and the dance arts to create a high-powered, synergistic workout that no isolated exercise technique can match. Nia is a blend of form (simple choreography) and freedom (freedance) The music is uplifting and inspiring. Nia is ideal for all ages and fitness levels. It's all about the Joy of Movement!

I found myself in a dance studio room with eight other women and the instructor, Anita, who appeared to be very happy.  I can't explain her any other way.  She had a large, lovely, constant smile and an aura of happiness, like a cloud of perfume, surrounding her.   Whatever drug she was on, I wanted to try it.  We all faced the mirror as the music started.  Lovely Anita danced and enunciated beautifully as she talked us through the movements.  Let me stop right here and state clearly for my audience, I am very clumsy.  The simple basic move was above my learning curve, but Anita said, "it's OK if you can't figure out the steps, just joyfully move to the music."  I kept trying.  At one point, we were all supposed to be moving our hips in a figure eight motion and even though I was moving more in a triangle, I was starting to get it.  "Close your eyes and lift your arms and finger tips to the ceiling and feel the joy of movement rush to your hips." Two separate types of movement involving two different body parts at the same time had me standing still, perplexed and confused.  And then it happened.  Lovely Anita made a noise similar to a climatic moment in the bedroom and joy hit me all right, in the form of a giggle, that bubbled out of my lips without control.   She opened one eye and caught mine in the mirror as I fought down the giggles. If my sisters had been there, we would have lost all control.  The next song was about free movement and we were encouraged to dance freely and joyfully about the studio.  I did my best to not look robotic as I alternated skipping and waving my arms about.  During the last bit, we rolled about on the floor stretching and relaxing our bodies. At the end of the class, Anita hugged every one at the door. She really was lovely.

Walking home, I decided it really wasn't my thing, but I might enjoy it as long as I didn't take it too seriously. It was nice seeing other women in all shapes and sizes finding joy in movement, even if some of them looked like seagulls flapping their wings during the free dance.  So I might go again.  Who knows? Maybe grace can be improved with practice and if the sounds coming from the instructor are any indication, she's enjoying herself.  I might have to try it again.  Or maybe boxing class, it might be fun to hit things.
