It's Just a Word

Soccer season started last week and it was a surprisingly poor start for a team capable of so much more. The first game of the season ended with a 0-0 tie after some very disappointing play. An inability to score despite having control of the game proved to be frustrating for the team and coaches leading to colorful, coarse language on the bus ride home, something I normally don't object to. Telling the team what they did wrong and what they did right and communicating that in language that the boys understand is the job of the coaches and none of my business. I have never been the mother to object to rough language, probably because I swear quite often. But I object to the use of coarse language when it puts some down in order to boost another. My input is not warranted nor needed for these two talented coaches to get this team going and maybe I shouldn't ask what was said on the way home.

So what's my problem? The use of the word "pussy" as an adjective to describe their play was not cool and not what I expect two highly educated men to use, especially men with daughters.

"Pussy is an English word meaning: Cat
As vulgar slang, the vulva or vagina
Pejoratively, a coward or weakling as an insult in general"

There is no doubt their play lacked intensity, aggression and they lost a lot of the 50/50 balls. Drop the f bomb all you want. Yell and scream til your voice is hoarse, but make your point in another way. Why does a vulgar slang word used to describe female anatomy need to be used as an insult to a soccer team or individuals playing poorly? If a girls team needed motivation would anyone yell they were playing like dickheads?

I can hear people saying I am taking this too seriously, and I might be, and I can also hear other Mothers getting all upset about it. Is this one of those times that it's okay for one man to say it to another man, but it's not okay for woman to hear or be part of? A "boys will be boys" thing?

Next time I won't ask and I hope Ben won't tell me what is said on the bus ride home. But if I ever catch him calling someone a "pussy" or my other favorite "douche bag", we will have an verbal exchange that may include coarse language. I expect better.
