The Next Four Years
Watching the Presidential debates, I saw lips moving and heard a lot of words but after a while all I heard was "blah, blah, blah" and I changed the channel. I can't stand hearing the bickering, bullying and TV ads that has become our political climate. Yeah we're a Democracy, but at times it feels more like lunacy.
I have some fundamental questions that I'm asking myself this year as I decide who to vote for. To be honest, I have never voted for a republican candidate before and it is unlikely I will this year, but the hope for change and prosperity as a nation that I felt four years ago has waned. So I weighing the issues important to me before I make a final decision.
Am I better off now than I was four years ago? No. Do I blame President Obama for it? No. Who do I think has the best possible chance to get us out of our financial mess? Neither of them, but I trust Obama more than Romney. He seems to be more upfront about his plans and his own personal finances. I don't believe a man with accounts in the Cayman Islands and I have the same financial worries.
Who will keep our country safe and out of conflict, particularly in the Middle East? Hilliary Clinton, but she isn't running for President. Who made her Secretary of State? Obama. She has done a terrific job. Part of being a good leader is picking the right people to help you.
Health Care should be part of the decision making process for all Americans. I don't know who will do a better job here, but with the country so divided, nothing may change, but it needs to and it needs to happen quickly, same for Social Security. Both sides need to pull together to make something work. But once again with the country so divided, the process of change will be that much harder. The question then becomes, which man is capable of pulling the country together? If he can reclaim the hope he brought us four years ago, then my vote once again goes to Obama. But actions speak louder than words and the last four years have made me wonder if he can pull us together. I don't believe Romney can unite us as a nation and get things done that will help everyone, not just the top tier.
Those are my big issues, though there are many more on the minds of the voters, myself included, immigration, the environment, and energy, to name a few. It comes down to one thing for me. My morals and beliefs are in closer alignment with Barack Obama. With the potential to nominate four Justices to the Supreme Court, my decision is made.
Never am I more proud to be an American than on Election Day. Every election season, my memories of my father are frequent and comforting. What would he think of this crazy world we live in and who would he vote for? He would vote, as he did every year, because that was his duty and right as an American citizen. Come election day, I will be voting and then glued to the TV to watch the returns. Four more years Mr President, but it's time to figure it out and get it done and that goes for both parties.
