The Week That Was

On Monday I went to the Dermatologist for a spot on my eyebrow. With my family and personal history of skin cancer I thought I'd have it checked out. Usually I can diagnose myself with skin stuff but I couldn't see it without reading glasses but the reading glasses blocked my view. It was a Seborrheic Keratosis, a benign skin growth that occurs as you AGE. Not only could I not see it, but it was an old lady spot. Boy did I feel old. The next day I got a zit the size of Montana on my chin and I didn't feel so old, but it was huge.

Tuesday was the season 3 finale of Sons of Anarchy and it was awesome. But it ended at 11:30 and I knew I was going to pay for staying up so late.

Wednesday I was so tired after staying up late the night before, that I went home after work with a pizza for Ben and I, instead of going to 677 Prime, a restaurant that I could never afford to go to, but it was a Medical Dinner and it was free. I can't believe I picked pizza and Ben over Sea Bass and adults who actually have a conversation over dinner. What was I thinking?

Thursday I got a message to call Ben's new Pediatrician. I finally spoke to her on Friday. Some blood work from September had just come back and it showed that Ben had been exposed and infected by a tick. It wasn't Lyme Disease but Anaplasmosis, a very rare tick borne illness. According to the Pediatrician that could have been what caused Ben to be so sick for five months over the summer and into the fall. It's cured by Doxycycline which Ben started taking in the fall for his acne, coincidentally when he started to feel better.

Ben yelled at me for ten minutes straight Friday morning for not waking him up early enough. I guess turning on his light, telling him to get up, poking him in the hip and then bellowing up the stairs, "Get Up NOW!!!" wasn't enough. He finally stopped when I pulled up to the school and told him to "Get Out". I told Ben all week he couldn't stay with me this weekend because I had to work, yet somehow he stayed Friday night with me and I gave him and his friends a ride to and from soccer and saw a patient in between. But I also had a moment of pure joy watching him play soccer with his friends. He was so happy.

I'm on call again this weekend, but I have Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday off. I have worked too much in the past month and I'm tired. I've had no revelations, no interesting experiences, and no breakthroughs this week. I really have nothing to share. But this is my life and I got through the week. Sometimes just getting through is pretty damn good.
