Last Walk
I rushed home from work today, changed into shorts and a long sleeved t shirt, and with great joy and sadness I started my last walk after work until next spring. After Sunday, it will be too dark. Tonight I had time for my favorite 3 mile loop. I'll still have weekends, but there is nothing like a 3 mile walk at dinnertime.
The first mile winds around a couple of schools and then I turn the corner onto Delaware Avenue. For the last several months, the city has been fixing up the street and more and more businesses are coming in. Right now it is diverse and eclectic and I enjoy seeing all the changes. The first thing I notice is the awesome smell of bar food coming out of the Elbo Room. Ah mozzarella sticks, wings, potato skins, all fat loaded. I keep going. A short while later, it Burger Centric, Andy's Italian Deli, Mi Ling, Taco Bell and KFC. The wonderful smells continue, but the best ones are coming. I walk past the Spectrum Movie Theatre check out the movie posters and smell the fresh popcorn, then it's the Ultraviolet Cafe and I can almost taste an Iced Mocha Latte. New World Bistro is next and I peer in as I walk by. The food looks awesome and I study the menu. I keep going. The smells pour out of Cardona's Italian Market and Catering and I can picture old Mr Cardona making the meatballs, even though he died last year and the store front has changed. And just when I think it can't get better, I smell the bread from Prinzo's Italian Bread Shop. All they sell is Italian bread, crusty on the outside and soft and yummy on the inside. Oh my god, it is heaven. The following block has Emack and Bolio's Ice Cream, Lauren's Dog House and Lou Bea's Pizzeria. I am hungry now, and I start to think about dinner. It's starting to get dark and I pick up the pace. Two blocks later the smells return with Vinny's Pizza and Wings and Things. It's exquisite torture. There is a reason I never bring money with me.
The last mile home is devoid of any eateries and wonderful food smells and I return to earth after a short time in heaven. My walks around the city bring me such joy and the joy comes in all shapes, sizes and yes, even smells. Want to go for a walk with me?
